**New Delhi:** Eminent economist and chairman of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s economic advisory council, Bibek Debroy, passed away early this morning at the age of 69. The Padma Shri awardee, known for his diverse expertise across economics, history, culture, and politics, succumbed to intestinal obstruction at AIIMS Delhi.

Prime Minister Modi expressed deep sorrow over Debroy’s demise, describing him as a “towering scholar” whose contributions have left an “indelible mark on India’s intellectual landscape.” Modi highlighted Debroy’s work on ancient Indian texts, making them accessible to young generations.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan lauded Debroy as a “distinguished economist, prolific author, and excellent academician.” He praised Debroy’s contributions to India’s economic development and the insightful columns he wrote for numerous newspapers.

Debroy’s career spanned prestigious institutions including Presidency College, Kolkata, Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Pune, and the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Delhi. He also served as the Director of a Ministry of Finance/UNDP project on legal reforms.

A prolific writer, Debroy authored and edited several books, papers, and popular articles. He was a Consulting/Contributing Editor for numerous newspapers and was a member of NITI Aayog until June 2019.

Debroy’s death has left a void in the world of economics, academia, and literature. He will be remembered for his sharp intellect, wide-ranging knowledge, and dedicated service to India’s development.
