**Hyderabad, India:** Bibek Debroy, a prominent economist and chairman of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Economic Advisory Council, passed away at the age of 69 on Friday morning. Debroy, who was receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness, breathed his last at Delhi’s AIIMS hospital.
Prime Minister Modi expressed his condolences on the passing of Debroy, commending him for his contributions to diverse fields including economics, history, culture, politics, and spirituality. He hailed Debroy’s significant role in shaping India’s economic policies and lauded his dedication to public policy.
Debroy, a recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri award, was a key figure in the formulation of India’s economic policies. He authored numerous books, articles, and op-eds and served as an editor for several newspapers. He was also known for his translations of ancient Sanskrit texts including the Mahabharata, Bhagavad Gita, Harivamsha, Vedas, and Valmiki Ramayana into English.
Debroy held several prominent positions throughout his career. He served as the Chancellor of Presidency College in Kolkata and the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics in Pune. He was also a member of the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council from 2004 to 2009, and chaired the committee formed by the Jharkhand Chief Minister to recommend a state development plan. He was also a member of the Chief Minister’s Economic Advisory Council in Rajasthan.
In 2014, Debroy was appointed chairman of the high-powered committee formed by the Railway Ministry to restructure Indian Railways. He became a permanent member of NITI Aayog in January 2015 and was appointed as the Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council in September 2017.
Debroy’s passing is a significant loss for the Indian economy and academic community. His contributions to public policy and economic discourse will be remembered for generations to come.
