Thu Oct 31 23:20:06 UTC 2024: ## Georgia’s Opposition Denounces Election as “Russian Special Operation,” Calls for Protests
**Tbilisi, Georgia** – In a dramatic display of unity, Georgia’s opposition has condemned the recent parliamentary election as a “complete falsification” and a “Russian special operation.” The opposition, led by President Salome Zourabichvili, has accused the ruling Georgian Dream party of rigging the vote under the influence of Russia.
President Zourabichvili, speaking at the presidential palace, declared she does not recognize the results of the election, calling it a “hybrid warfare” waged against Georgia. She urged Georgians to gather in protest on Rustaveli Avenue, the capital’s main street, to “peacefully defend every vote and our future.”
The opposition’s accusations come amid widespread concerns about the election’s integrity. Numerous international observers reported “systematic” intimidation, harassment, and voter bribery during the voting process. Some observers, like former US Representative John Shimkus, even described an “atmosphere of fear” at polling stations.
The opposition blames Russia for the irregularities, claiming Moscow is conducting a “hybrid war” to influence the election. The Georgian Dream party, led by billionaire oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili, is accused of harboring pro-Russian sympathies, and Ivanishvili himself made his fortune in the Soviet Union.
The US has joined calls for a full investigation into the election irregularities and urged Georgian leaders to address the electoral process’s shortcomings.
Despite the opposition’s claims, the Georgian government has declared its first high-level visitor after the election will be Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a known supporter of the Georgian Dream party. Orban’s visit is seen as a show of support for the ruling party, which has been criticized for its illiberal policies.
The current situation in Georgia highlights a deep division within the country, with the opposition firmly opposed to the ruling party’s alleged pro-Russian leanings and accusations of election fraud. The coming days will be crucial as the opposition mobilizes for protests and calls for a fair and transparent investigation into the election process.
