Thu Oct 31 20:33:30 UTC 2024: ## Diwali Celebrations in Amritsar Amidst Confusion and Controversy
Amritsar is abuzz with Diwali festivities despite confusion surrounding the actual date of celebration. While the festival is being celebrated on November 1st in some parts of the city, others are adhering to the traditional date of October 29th.
The Golden Temple will observe “Bandi Chhod Diwas” (Release Day) on November 1st, commemorating the release of Guru Hargobind Ji and 52 other prisoners by Mughal Emperor Jahangir. This year, the Sri Akal Takht Sahib has issued a directive for only ghee diyas (oil lamps) to be lit on this occasion, refraining from electric decorations. This directive is in remembrance of the 40th anniversary of the 1984 Sikh massacre.
The Sri Durgiana Temple will also celebrate Diwali on November 1st. Meanwhile, many residents are opting to celebrate Diwali on October 30th, adhering to the traditional date. Shops and businesses will be performing Lakshmi puja on November 1st.
This confusion over the date has not dampened the festive spirit in Amritsar. Markets are teeming with shoppers, with some remaining open late into the night.
Local politicians, including MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla and Improvement Trust Chairman Dinesh Bassi, have extended Diwali greetings to their constituents.
