Thu Oct 31 02:10:00 UTC 2024: ## Yankees Fans Banned for Ripping Ball from Betts’ Glove, Seats Gifted to Pediatric Cancer Patient
Two New York Yankees fans were ejected from Game 4 of the World Series after they ripped a foul ball from Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts’ glove. The fans, who had been under the impression they would be allowed to attend Game 5, have been banned from Yankee Stadium for Wednesday’s game.
The incident occurred in the first inning of Game 4 when Betts attempted to catch a foul ball hit by Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres. One fan pried open Betts’ glove, causing the ball to pop loose, while another grabbed the Dodgers star’s hand. The fans were escorted out of the stadium by security after receiving high-fives from fellow Yankees supporters.
The Yankees have taken a strong stance, issuing a statement that condemned the fans’ actions, stating, “The safety and security of players, fans and Stadium staff is the foundational element of every event held at Yankee Stadium, and it cannot be compromised.”
In a heartwarming gesture, the Yankees have gifted the seats vacated by the banned fans to a 15-year-old New Jersey pediatric cancer patient and his family. Patrick, diagnosed with DSRCT Sarcoma in June 2023, was set to attend a “Kids Only” Press Conference with Yankees players but fell ill and had to undergo surgery. The Yankees contacted the family and provided them with tickets to their first ever playoff game at Yankee Stadium.
Betts, while expressing anger at the incident, downplayed the severity, stating that he was fine and that the team’s loss was more important. His teammate, Tommy Edman, however, called the incident “unacceptable.”
This is not the first time this World Series that Torres has had a ball affected by fan interference. In Game 1, a fan reached over the wall and caught a ball hit by Torres, resulting in him being awarded a double.
The Yankees ultimately defeated the Dodgers 11-4 in Game 4, but the Dodgers still lead the series 3-1.
