**OTTAWA, CANADA -** The United States has expressed concern over Canada’s allegations against India’s Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing him of orchestrating attacks against Khalistani separatists in Canada. This comes after Canada’s Deputy Foreign Minister David Morrison confirmed to a parliamentary committee that Shah was the “senior official in India” referenced in a recent Washington Post report. The report claimed that Indian intelligence agencies were behind these attacks.
The US State Department spokesperson, Matthew Miller, stated that the US would continue to consult with Canada on the issue.
Meanwhile, the RCMP Commissioner, Mike Duheme, acknowledged the possibility that Canadian criminals may be directing operations in India, mirroring the allegations against India. He emphasized the importance of cooperation between Canadian and Indian authorities to address the issue of extremism in both countries.
The diplomatic row between India and Canada escalated following the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen declared a Khalistani terrorist by India. Canada declared India’s High Commissioner Sanjay Verma a “person of interest” in the investigation, leading to India recalling Verma and five other diplomats. In response, India expelled six Canadian diplomats, further escalating the situation.
The Canadian government hinted at potential sanctions against India, while India dismissed all allegations, including those made by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
This incident highlights the complex and sensitive issue of extremism and the challenges of international cooperation in addressing these threats.
