**LONDON** – 18-year-old goalkeeper Tommy Setford, Arsenal’s first signing of the summer, is poised for his first-team debut against Preston North End in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday. The young keeper, who arrived with a strong reputation after shining for Ajax’s youth teams and representing England at various junior levels, has been a rapid addition to the Gunners squad.
“It’s been a whirlwind,” Setford shared in a recent interview with Arsenal.com. “A year ago, I was playing at the Ajax Academy, and now I’m the second-choice keeper for a Premier League game at Arsenal.”
Setford’s football journey began at a young age, inspired by his older brother Charlie, who also followed a path as a goalkeeper. The brothers were scouted by Ajax, with Tommy joining the Dutch giants at age seven.
His move to Arsenal came about after a meeting with scouts and a visit to the training ground. “I knew in my heart that Arsenal was the right move for me. I wanted to take the next step in my career, and I believed Arsenal would be the perfect place for me to develop further,” he explained.
Setford’s first month at Arsenal was challenging, with the intense training demanding quick adaptation. However, he has since settled in, feeling more comfortable and confident. His performance on the US tour with the first team, where he was welcomed by senior players and staff, was a highlight.
“It was an amazing experience,” he shared. “The first-team players and staff were very welcoming, which made it easier for us younger players to feel comfortable.”
He also expressed his admiration for Arsenal’s current goalkeeping contingent, particularly David Raya. “One of David’s standout qualities is his consistency – he rarely makes mistakes and is always fully focused. His reactions are lightning quick, and his intensity in training and matches is top-notch.”
While Setford represents England due to his English father, he was born and raised in the Netherlands. His father’s influence on his sporting journey is undeniable, being a professional golfer himself.
“We’re definitely a sporty family, although he hasn’t had much luck teaching me golf – I keep topping the ball!” he joked.
Setford’s commitment to Arsenal is evident, with his aspirations focused on consistent performances for the Under-21s and proving himself at the senior level.
“If I get more opportunities with the first team, I want to prove myself on the big stage and show the coaches and fans that I’m ready for Premier League football,” he concluded.
With his talent, dedication, and willingness to learn from the best, Setford’s journey at Arsenal is one to watch closely as he embarks on a promising career.
