Thu Oct 31 08:50:00 UTC 2024: ## Nagaland Cabinet Approves Creation of New Meluri District

**Kohima, October 30 (PTI):** The Nagaland government has approved the creation of a new district, Meluri, by bifurcating the existing Phek district. The decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Wednesday.

The Meluri sub-division, home to the Pochury Naga tribe, will become the 17th district of Nagaland upon implementation. This marks the fifth district created in the last three years.

Forest Minister CL John, the government spokesperson, confirmed the decision to PTI.

The creation of Meluri follows the establishment of Tseminyu, Chumoukedima, and Niuland districts in December 2021, carved out of Dimapur, and Shamator district in January 2022, created by dividing Tuensang district.

Meluri MLA, Z Nyusietho Nyuthe, expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Rio and hailed the Chakhesang community, the majority in Phek district, for their support of the Pochury tribe’s demand.

The Meluri sub-division encompasses 1,011 sq km, comprises 31 recognized villages, and has four administrative headquarters. The industrial town of Wazeho and the International Trade Centre (ITC) in Avangkhu, situated on the Myanmar border, are located within the sub-division.

The Pochury Hoho, the apex body of the Pochury tribe, has hailed this decision as a “red letter day” for the community and expressed their thanks to the Chief Minister, his cabinet colleagues, and the local MLA.
