**Kohima, Oct 31:** The Nagaland government has officially announced the creation of Meluri as the state’s 17th district, following a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio. This move splits Phek district, creating a new administrative region primarily inhabited by the Pochury Naga tribe.
Meluri, covering 1,011 square kilometers, includes 31 recognized villages and key locations like the industrial town of Wazeho and the International Trade Centre (ITC) in Avangkhu, located near the Myanmar border. This marks the fifth new district established in Nagaland in recent years, joining Tseminyu, Chumoukedima, Niuland, and Shamator.
Local MLA Z Nyusietho Nyuthe expressed gratitude for the decision, acknowledging the support from the Chakhesang community and the Chief Minister. The Pochury Hoho, the tribe’s governing body, has hailed this development as a major milestone for their community.
