Newcastle United secured their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with a convincing 2-0 victory over Chelsea at St. James’ Park on Wednesday. Despite dominating possession and creating a number of chances, the Blues were unable to find a way past a resilient Newcastle defense.
The home side took the lead in the 23rd minute when a misplaced pass from Renato Veiga allowed Alexander Isak to slot the ball past Filip Jorgensen. Just three minutes later, Chelsea’s woes continued when a cross from Isak was deflected into the path of Joe Willock, whose header was turned into his own net by Axel Disasi.
Chelsea enjoyed a significant share of possession in the second half and came close to pulling a goal back on multiple occasions, but were thwarted by a combination of excellent goalkeeping from Nick Pope and heroic defending.
Despite their efforts, Chelsea ultimately fell short, and manager Maresca’s side will now turn their focus to the Premier League, where they will face Manchester United on Sunday. Newcastle, meanwhile, will await their quarter-final opponent in the draw, which is set to take place following the Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester City match.
