**Jerusalem** – Israeli authorities have arrested an Israeli couple on suspicion of spying for Iran, marking the latest in a series of arrests related to alleged Iranian espionage operations in the country.
The couple, identified as Rafael and Lala Goliev from the city of Lod, are accused of gathering intelligence on critical national infrastructure, security sites, and conducting surveillance of a female academic. Police allege that the couple was recruited by Elshan Agayev, an Azerbaijani national acting on behalf of Iranian officials.
This arrest follows the apprehension of two other suspected spy rings in the past week. On October 22nd, seven Palestinians from East Jerusalem were arrested for allegedly planning attacks on behalf of Iran. A day earlier, seven Israeli citizens from Haifa were detained for carrying out numerous espionage missions on Iran’s behalf.
These arrests come amidst heightened tensions between Israel and Iran, who are involved in a multi-front conflict across the region. Israel has long accused Iran of seeking to destabilize the country through proxy groups like Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthi rebels.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the Goliev’s alleged activities and the extent of their involvement in Iranian intelligence operations.
