Thu Oct 31 06:20:00 UTC 2024: ## Apple Urges iPhone Users to Update Immediately: iOS 18.1 Patches 28 Security Flaws
**San Francisco, October 29, 2024** – Apple has released iOS 18.1, urging iPhone users to update their devices as soon as possible due to the update patching a significant number of security vulnerabilities. The update addresses 28 security flaws, impacting various aspects of the iOS operating system, including the Kernel and WebKit, the engine behind Safari.
While Apple typically remains tight-lipped about specific vulnerability details, the update addresses issues that could potentially allow attackers to access sensitive data, bypass security measures, and even gain unauthorized access to a user’s iPhone.
Among the notable fixes, iOS 18.1 addresses a vulnerability in the Kernel (CVE-2024-44239), which could have allowed apps to leak sensitive kernel information. Additionally, the update fixes two WebKit flaws, one (CVE-2024-44261) potentially allowing attackers to view restricted content from the lock screen and the other (CVE-2024-44244) enabling malicious web content to bypass Content Security Policy.
“Most of the vulnerabilities appear to be privacy or information leakage – albeit in some cases sensitive information,” says Sean Wright, head of application security at Featurespace. “But in most cases, the likelihood of the flaws being exploited is extremely low.”
Despite the low risk of immediate exploitation, security experts recommend updating to iOS 18.1 as soon as possible to ensure maximum device security.
For those hesitant to jump to iOS 18, Apple has also released iOS 17.7.1, which addresses many of the same vulnerabilities, though the list of fixes is less extensive.
The update is available for all compatible iPhone models and can be downloaded by going to Settings > General > Software Update.
