Thu Oct 31 00:00:21 UTC 2024: ## Van Nistelrooy Leads Manchester United to EFL Cup Victory in First Game as Interim Manager

Manchester United cruised to a 5-2 victory over Leicester City in their first match under interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, securing their spot in the EFL Cup quarterfinals where they will face Tottenham. Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes each bagged a brace, while Alejandro Garnacho also added a goal for the Red Devils.

Van Nistelrooy, taking the reins following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag on Monday, expressed his delight with the team’s performance: “Credit to the players, they were fantastic today. I couldn’t ask for more,” he said. He highlighted the team’s finishing prowess, contrasting it with their recent struggles against West Ham and Fenerbahce: “Against West Ham and Fenerbahce, we created so much and couldn’t finish. All of a sudden, we had some luck on our side, and that made it a great night.”

Van Nistelrooy, who returned to Old Trafford as ten Hag’s assistant in July, admitted the emotional weight of taking over from his former boss: “It is clear that this is going to be short term, so for me, today was the most important day after what happened.” He fondly recalled his first conversation with ten Hag, stating “He was the one that asked me to work back here again, and in the first conversation we had, I felt such a passion and care for this football club. That is why I was so sad to see him go.”

Despite the sadness, Van Nistelrooy emphasized the importance of moving forward: “Football and life continue,” he said, acknowledging the overwhelming support of the fans. “We tried to switch that button for the players, try to get the mindset going, and go out tonight and give everything for the fans.”

Looking toward his future at United, Van Nistelrooy expressed his unwavering commitment: “I am here to help, to serve and give my everything for the club. That will never change.”

The win marks a promising start for Van Nistelrooy as he navigates the interim period before Ruben Amorim, the current Sporting CP manager, is expected to be announced as ten Hag’s successor.
