The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued urgent warnings for travellers heading to 18 countries, including popular tourist destinations such as Egypt, Morocco, Dubai, Cyprus, and Turkey. The warnings come amidst heightened tensions in the Middle East, fuelled by recent Israeli attacks on Iran and ongoing hostilities between Israel and Lebanon.
The FCDO specifically advises travellers to take extra precautions in Cyprus, Turkey, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, The Occupied Palestinian Territories, Israel, Libya, Iran, Lebanon, and Syria. The FCDO warns that “ongoing hostilities in the region…could escalate quickly and pose risks for the wider region”.
The warnings follow a series of escalating events, including:
* **Iran’s missile attacks on Israel**: On October 1st, Iran launched around 200 ballistic missiles at Israel, prompting Israeli retaliation.
* **Israel’s airstrikes on Iran**: On October 26th, Israel carried out military action against Iran, targeting sites allegedly used to produce missiles and surface-to-air missile facilities.
* **Terrorist attack in Turkey**: On October 23rd, a terrorist attack on a Turkish Aerospace Industries’ facility resulted in five deaths and 22 injuries. The incident led to increased security measures at Turkish airports, potentially causing delays for travellers.
The FCDO emphasizes that travel insurance could be invalidated if travellers disregard the warnings. They urge travellers to monitor the situation closely and follow the advice of local authorities.
Experts warn that the recent events could escalate into a full-blown war, particularly with the involvement of Iran-backed militant groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah.
