Thu Oct 31 03:19:37 UTC 2024: ## Diwali 2023: Confusion Over Date, Auspicious Time for Lakshmi Puja

Diwali, the festival of lights and one of India’s biggest celebrations, is observed on the new moon day (Amavasya) of the Kartik month. This year, however, there is confusion regarding the exact date of Diwali, with some celebrating it on October 31st and others on November 1st.

According to astrologers, Amavasya starts at 3:53 PM on October 31st and lasts until 6:17 PM on November 1st, after which the Pratipada tithi begins. This shift has also affected the timing for Lakshmi Puja.

Renowned Udaipur-based Pandit Harishchandra Sharma explained that Lakshmi is believed to roam the earth at night, making the evening after sunset (Pradosh Kaal) the most auspicious time for Diwali worship. This period lasts approximately 2 hours and 24 minutes. Since Amavasya continues throughout the night of October 31st, it is considered ideal for performing Deepa Daan on that night.

However, Lakshmi Puja can also be performed on November 1st, although the auspicious time will be in the evening rather than at night.

**Auspicious Timings for Lakshmi Puja (October 31st):**

* **Ghodhuli Muhurat:** 5:36 PM to 6:02 PM
* **Sandhya Muhurat:** 5:36 PM to 6:54 PM
* **Nishita Kaal Muhurat:** 11:39 PM to 12:31 AM

The most auspicious time for Lakshmi Puja on October 31st falls between 6:25 PM and 8:20 PM.

**Auspicious Timings for Lakshmi Puja (November 1st):**

Amavasya tithi prevails until 6:16 PM on November 1st, with sunset occurring around 5:36 PM. This leaves only a 40-minute window for Lakshmi Puja.

**Pandits recommend celebrating Diwali and performing Lakshmi-Ganesha puja on October 31st as it aligns with the Amavasya tithi and is considered more auspicious according to scriptures.**
