Wed Oct 30 20:02:24 UTC 2024: ## TMC Rebuts Modi’s Ayushman Bharat Criticism, Highlights State’s Own Health Scheme
**Kolkata, India:** A heated exchange erupted between the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) over the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme in West Bengal.
Following Prime Minister Modi’s accusation that the state government was deliberately blocking the scheme for political reasons, the TMC strongly refuted the claims, asserting that their own health initiative, Swastho Sathi, offers superior benefits and covers a wider population.
The Prime Minister had criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s decision to not implement Ayushman Bharat, arguing it was a political move that denied free healthcare to the elderly. He announced an extension of the scheme to cover all citizens over 70, expressing regret for being unable to serve those in West Bengal and Delhi due to their governments’ policies.
However, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh countered that the state government created Swastho Sathi because Ayushman Bharat relies on significant state funding but doesn’t cover everyone. “The PM says we failed to implement the scheme, but he should clarify why,” Ghosh stated, emphasizing that the state funds the Kisan Bima Yojana (farm insurance scheme) fully as well.
Ghosh highlighted the inclusivity of Swastho Sathi, which covers everyone, unlike Ayushman Bharat, which he said excludes those without smartphones or cars. He also accused the central government of failing to release funds for the MGNREGA, forcing the state to bear the costs.
The clash highlights the ongoing tension between the BJP-led central government and the TMC-ruled West Bengal. While the Prime Minister emphasizes the benefits of Ayushman Bharat, the TMC maintains that their own state-level program provides a better solution for West Bengal residents.
