**Sanford, NC** – Alvin Odell Godfrey, a lifelong resident of North Carolina and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2024, at the age of 92. Godfrey was born in Sanford in 1932 and spent his early years working on the family farm. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1952, serving with distinction during his four-year term and traveling as far as Greenland and Iceland. After his service, he met his wife, Annette Lee, on a blind date and they married in 1958. The couple welcomed two sons, Gary and Mitchell, and lived in Falls Church, Virginia, where Godfrey worked for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. He drove a bus for 16 years before transitioning to the D.C. Metro Subway as a train operator, eventually becoming a test train operator and working on the expansion of the Orange Line.
After retiring from WMATA, Godfrey and his wife moved to Sunset Beach, North Carolina. He enjoyed fishing, boating, and making wine. He was known for his love of country music, NASCAR racing, and the Washington Redskins, having held season tickets for 25 years.
Godfrey is survived by his wife, Annette; his sons, Gary and Todd; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He will be remembered for his kind heart, his love of family, and his dedication to his community.
A funeral service will be held at 11:30 AM on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at Barbecue Presbyterian Church in Sanford, NC, with burial following in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall after the service.
