Wed Oct 30 18:27:00 UTC 2024: ## Delhi Sees 43% Pedestrian Fatalities in 2023 Road Accidents: Report
**New Delhi:** Pedestrians continue to be the most vulnerable road users in the national capital, accounting for a staggering 43% of all road accident fatalities in 2023, according to the Delhi Road Accident Death Report released by Delhi Police on Wednesday.
Despite a slight decrease in overall road accident deaths from 1,264 in 2022 to 1,257 in 2023, the number of cases registered increased from 4,38,052 to 6,39,097. The report, compiled by Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora, analyzes the causes of road accidents and offers suggestions for improving road design, regulation, and prosecution.
The report highlights the need for a comprehensive road safety plan that includes a multi-departmental approach focusing on awareness, engineering, enforcement, and emergency care.
“Delhi Traffic Police’s efforts have resulted in a 20% decrease in road accident fatalities in the past decade,” said Special Commissioner (Traffic) Ajay Chaudhary. “We are now shifting our focus towards more pedestrian-centric traffic management to further reduce fatalities.”
Two-wheeler riders were the second most affected category, accounting for 38% of all fatalities.
The report identifies several accident-prone areas in Delhi, including ISBT Kashmere Gate, Mukarba Chowk, Libaspur Bus Stand, Kashmere Gate Chowk, Burari Chowk, Britannia Chowk, Bhalswa Chowk, Wazirpur Depot, Mori Gate Roundabout, and Gandhi Vihar Bus Stand.
Apart from these, 10 other roads witnessed over 10 fatalities in 2023, including National Highway 8, Road Number 56, Kanjhawla Road, National Highway 24, Road Number 201, Patel Road, Pankha Road, Vikas Marg, and Narela Road.
The report emphasizes the need for design interventions in these areas to reduce accidents and ensure pedestrian safety.
