**Mirpur, Bangladesh:** Bangladesh spinner Taijul Islam achieved a significant milestone on the first day of the Mirpur Test against South Africa, claiming his 200th Test wicket and becoming only the second Bangladeshi bowler to reach the landmark.
Taijul’s feat came in the midst of a thrilling first day, which saw a total of 16 wickets fall. Despite Bangladesh being bowled out for a paltry 106 runs, Taijul shone brightly, claiming a remarkable five-wicket haul for the visitors.
His fourth wicket of the day, dismissing debutant Matthew Breetzke, marked the momentous occasion. This achievement puts him second in the list of highest wicket-takers for Bangladesh, behind only the legendary Shakib Al Hasan, who holds the record with 246 wickets.
What makes Taijul’s achievement even more impressive is his speed in reaching the milestone. He achieved the feat in his 48th Test, while Shakib took 54 Tests to reach the same landmark.
“It feels good,” said Taijul, expressing his gratitude for the achievement. “There are many bowlers around the world who have 200 wickets… or 300, 400 wickets. Our players don’t play that many Tests, so not many have achieved it. But I’m one of the few. It’s not a matter of pride. Allah has granted it, Alhamdulillah it has happened.”
Taijul’s performance is a testament to his dedication and skill, as he continues to climb the ranks of Bangladesh’s bowling greats. He is now just 46 wickets away from overtaking Mohammad Rafique for the third spot on the list, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz sits in second place with 183 wickets.
