Wed Oct 30 16:02:06 UTC 2024: ## Google Faces Absurd $20 Decillion Fine in Russia Over YouTube Ban
**Moscow, Russia** – A Russian court has issued a staggering fine of $20 decillion against Google for blocking content from Russian media outlets on YouTube. This astronomical amount dwarfs the global GDP by a factor of 200 trillion and is likely to be unpayable even by Google, whose last quarterly revenue was $88 billion.
The lawsuit stemmed from the 2020 ban of the ultra-nationalist Tsargrad channel by YouTube in response to US sanctions against its owner. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the ban was extended to other channels, including state-owned outlets like Zvezda, owned by the Ministry of Defence.
The court found Google liable for removing these channels and ordered the restoration of their accounts. The penalty was set at 100,000 rubles ($1,025) per day, doubling every week, resulting in the monumental fine due to the effect of compounding interest.
Despite the immense amount, Google appears unconcerned. The tech giant has already pulled out of Russia in 2022 due to seized bank accounts and insists the fine will not affect its finances. The company is currently fighting legal battles in various countries to prevent Russia from seizing its assets.
This is a stark example of the increasing tensions between Russia and Western tech giants over censorship and control of online platforms. With the court’s verdict and the ongoing legal battles, this case highlights the challenges of navigating complex geopolitical landscapes in the digital age.
