The New Yorker is gearing up for the upcoming New York City Marathon with a special cover illustration by acclaimed artist Lorenzo Mattotti. The November 4th issue will feature Mattotti’s rendition of the iconic race, capturing “the collective spirit of all the runners” as they navigate the five boroughs.
The cover marks the magazine’s celebration of the race, which is expected to draw over 50,000 participants and a million spectators on November 3rd. The New Yorker has previously featured running-themed covers, including “April 11, 1931” by Peter Arno, “Early Start” by Carter Goodrich, and “The Finish Line” by R. Kikuo Johnson.
This week’s issue also includes a diverse range of articles, from personal stories about a lost wedding ring and the experiences of Ukrainian refugees to explorations of the world’s top restaurants and the ethical dilemmas faced by scientists.
