Mon Oct 28 04:20:00 UTC 2024: ## Will Ferrell and Transgender Friend Harper Steele Embark on Road Trip to Promote Allyship in New Netflix Documentary

**Toronto, Canada** – Will Ferrell and his long-time friend, Harper Steele, who came out as transgender in 2021, are using their platform to promote understanding and allyship for the LGBTQ+ community in their new Netflix documentary, “Will & Harper.” The film follows the duo on a cross-country road trip as Steele explores her identity and Ferrell deepens his understanding of her journey.

The documentary, directed by Josh Greenbaum, showcases the power of friendship and the importance of leading by example. Ferrell, known for his comedic roles in films like “Old School” and “Anchorman,” admits to having “zero knowledge” about the trans community before the film, but expresses genuine interest in learning and supporting his friend.

“I think we’re getting a sense of that,” Ferrell says about the film’s potential influence on his fans. “Once Harper said, ‘OK, you know what? Let’s do it,’ that was probably the second part of the conversation — that she articulated the fact this is something that will help [her], but she brought up the great point of exposing that part of my audience that maybe wouldn’t be inclined to even investigate anything like this.”

Steele, a writer and former head writer for “Saturday Night Live,” emphasizes the importance of men like Ferrell and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who challenge traditional notions of masculinity and stand up for the LGBTQ+ community.

“I think people are threatened by trans people, by queer people, by women,” Steele says, “and so this sort of toxic nature has grown a little bit out of this. I think the basic component is men who are not threatened by something they’re hiding themselves maybe, or something that they’re afraid of, or that is unknown.”

“Will & Harper” aims to use humor and a personal story to open up conversations about transgender issues and encourage allyship. Both Ferrell and Steele believe that leading by example can inspire positive change and promote understanding within the broader community.

“Just by nature of being trans, I’m now a political person in a way,” Steele states, highlighting the importance of allies speaking up against misgendering and discrimination. “This was the light bulb moment for me,” Ferrell adds, “‘Oh, if I’m really going to walk the walk here, maybe this is a way to do that and we could have a great time, and it would also be educational for me.’ Just be that — lead by example.”

“Will & Harper” is now available on Netflix.
