Mon Oct 28 15:55:20 UTC 2024: ## Far-Right Activist Tommy Robinson Jailed for Contempt of Court

**LONDON** – Tommy Robinson, a prominent British far-right activist, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for contempt of court. The 41-year-old, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, admitted to breaching a court order ten times by repeating libelous claims against a Syrian refugee schoolboy named Jamal Hijazi.

Robinson was previously ordered to pay Hijazi £100,000 in damages and refrain from spreading false accusations after Hijazi successfully sued him for libel. Despite this, Robinson screened a film containing the allegations in London’s Trafalgar Square, prompting the Solicitor General for England and Wales to file two contempt claims against him.

Sentencing Robinson, Justice Johnson declared the activist’s actions a “blatant” breach of libel restrictions and stressed that “nobody is above the law.” Robinson’s conviction comes days after he handed himself in at a police station and was separately charged with refusing to provide police access to his mobile phone under British terror law.

Robinson’s imprisonment highlights the consequences of disregarding court orders and underscores the legal system’s commitment to protecting individuals from malicious and unfounded accusations. This conviction marks a significant moment for the fight against hate speech and misinformation in the UK.
