Indian star pacer Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy due to an ankle injury sustained during the recent World Cup. Shami, who played through the pain in the tournament, is currently working on his fitness and aims to return to competitive cricket through the Ranji Trophy.
In a social media post, Shami shared a video of his training, expressing his commitment to regaining full fitness and playing domestic red ball cricket. “Putting in my efforts and getting better with my bowling fitness day-by-day,” he wrote.
Shami, who last played for India in the World Cup, has not featured in any competitive cricket since then. He is expected to make his comeback in Bengal’s Ranji Trophy matches against Karnataka or Madhya Pradesh next month.
While Shami is currently not in the squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, there is a chance he could still make it if he proves his fitness in the Ranji matches. Earlier this month, he was seen bowling in the nets in Bengaluru under the guidance of bowling coach Morne Morkel.
In his absence, the selectors have chosen pacer Harshit Rana and fast-bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, both yet to make their Test debut for India. Rana, who was recently named in the limited-overs squad, has been backed by Kolkata Knight Riders head coach Gautam Gambhir.
Shami, who has a decent record in Australia with 31 wickets in eight Tests, is a vital asset to the Indian team. With his return through Ranji Trophy, he hopes to regain his form and potentially be included in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy squad.
