Sun Oct 27 20:42:50 UTC 2024: ## Israel Strikes Iranian Military Sites, Tehran Refrains from Immediate Retaliation

**TEL AVIV/TEHRAN** – Israel has launched airstrikes on multiple military sites in Iran, claiming to have crippled Iranian air defense and missile production systems. The attacks, which reportedly killed at least four Iranian soldiers, were in retaliation for Iranian missile attacks on Israel on October 1st.

While Iranian officials condemned the strikes, they have refrained from immediate retaliation. Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, in his first public statement since the attack, stated that the response to the Israeli action should be carefully considered and serve the interests of the Iranian nation.

President Masoud Pezeshkian echoed Khamenei’s measured tone, saying that Iran does not seek war but will defend its rights. He assured the public that an appropriate response would be given.

The Israeli attacks were reportedly more limited than some observers expected, focusing on military targets and avoiding oil and nuclear facilities. The US had reportedly pressured Israel not to strike these sensitive sites.

Despite the limited damage inflicted, Iranian media has portrayed the attacks as a minor victory, highlighting the interception of most incoming missiles. This messaging, analysts say, is aimed at reassuring the Iranian public.

Meanwhile, fighting continues between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon and between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. An Israeli airstrike on Sidon, Lebanon, killed eight people, while another strike on a school-turned-shelter in Gaza killed nine, including three Palestinian journalists.

Amidst the escalating violence, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi proposed a two-day ceasefire in Gaza, involving an exchange of hostages and prisoners. However, Hamas has so far rejected this proposal, maintaining its demands for a complete ceasefire, Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and a prisoner swap.

International concern is rising about the potential for a wider regional conflict. Western countries have urged Iran to refrain from responding to the Israeli strikes, hoping to prevent further escalation.
