Mon Oct 28 11:40:00 UTC 2024: ## Ten Hag Fumes as Controversial Penalty Sinks Manchester United
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has expressed his frustration and anger after his side suffered a 2-1 defeat at West Ham, blaming a controversial late penalty decision for the loss.
United dominated possession and created numerous chances throughout the match, but failed to capitalise on their dominance, with several clear opportunities going begging. The game appeared headed for a draw until the second minute of injury time when referee David Coote awarded a penalty to West Ham after reviewing a challenge by Matthijs de Ligt on Danny Ings.
Ten Hag argued that the VAR intervention was unnecessary and that the initial decision by the on-field referee was correct. “Before the season there was the instruction about VAR only interfering in clear and obvious mistakes,” he said, adding, “That is definitely not a clear and obvious mistake from the on-field referee.”
The penalty, converted by Jarrod Bowen, secured the win for West Ham, leaving United with their fourth Premier League defeat of the season.
“That’s a third time I have felt injustice in the season,” Ten Hag said, “It’s not right.”
Despite the manager’s anger, the Premier League confirmed that VAR deemed sufficient contact had occurred between De Ligt and Ings to warrant a penalty.
West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui, while not having witnessed the incident himself, was satisfied with the decision, citing the players’ and referee’s agreement.
The result leaves Manchester United languishing in 13th place in the Premier League table, with just three wins from their opening nine games. Their poor goal-scoring form continues to be a major concern, with only Crystal Palace and Southampton having scored fewer goals this season.
With growing pressure on Ten Hag, the question now arises about his long-term future at Old Trafford. His side has only won once in their last eight matches across all competitions, leaving the club’s co-owner and executives with a difficult decision to make.
