Despite the Reds’ impressive form, Souness believes Slot’s true mettle will be tested when the inevitable defeats start to come. He criticizes the new manager’s “less exciting” approach, citing the recent Chelsea victory as an example of Liverpool’s lack of attacking impetus.
“I look at Arsenal and Manchester City and think, right now, they’re both still ahead of Liverpool,” Souness said. “His problems will start when they start to lose a few games, and I guarantee that, sooner rather than later, you will see a very different Arne Slot.”
Souness’s comments echo the sentiment of many Liverpool fans who yearn for the “heavy metal” football synonymous with the Klopp era. While acknowledging Slot’s initial success, Souness asserts that the Reds need to be more proactive and aggressive on the pitch.
“The way they play is not as Rock and Roll as it was under Jurgen Klopp,” he concluded. “When you look back through the history of Liverpool, the fans want to see their team on the front foot.”
