Mon Oct 21 14:08:31 UTC 2024: South Korea has summoned the Russian ambassador to demand the immediate withdrawal of North Korean troops, which it claims are being trained to fight in Ukraine. According to South Korea’s spy agency, approximately 1,500 North Korean soldiers, including special forces, have already arrived in Russia. In a meeting with the ambassador, South Korean officials expressed their concerns and warned of potential responses.

The Russian ambassador, Georgiy Zinoviev, emphasized that cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang is legal and did not confirm the troop allegations. South Korea has accused North Korea of supplying weapons to Russia, asserting that the situation has escalated beyond mere military material transfers.

The increase in military cooperation between Russia and North Korea follows a security pact signed in June by leaders Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un, which includes mutual defense pledges. South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is urging NATO to consider countermeasures and enhance security cooperation involving South Korea, Ukraine, and NATO.

International reaction has been strong, with the United States, Japan, and the UK condemning the growing ties between North Korea and Russia. Chinese officials have called for de-escalation and a political solution to the Ukraine crisis.

Defense experts suggest that North Korea’s involvement could complicate the conflict and lead to increased international sanctions, although they note challenges for Russian forces integrating North Korean troops due to language barriers and lack of recent combat experience.

In other news, Moldova’s voters have narrowly opted for EU membership over retaining close ties to Russia.
