Fri Oct 18 02:22:44 UTC 2024: ## Hamas Leader Yahya Sinwar Killed in Israeli Operation: Gaza in Ruins, Future Uncertain

**Gaza City, October 18, 2024:** Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas and architect of the devastating October 2023 attack on Israel, has been killed in an Israeli operation in Gaza’s Rafah, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) announced on Thursday.

Sinwar, born in a refugee camp in southern Gaza, had been a prominent figure in Hamas since its inception in 1987. He spent 22 years in Israeli prisons for his role in the group’s activities, including the murder of 12 Palestinians deemed “collaborators” with Israel.

Following his release in 2011, Sinwar rose through the ranks of Hamas, eventually becoming the group’s leader in Gaza in 2017. Though he expressed a desire for moderation in the early years of his leadership, Sinwar’s response to what he saw as the marginalization of the Palestinian issue was a surprise attack on Israel in October 2023.

This attack, which resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 Israelis, prompted a brutal Israeli counter-offensive that left Gaza in ruins and killed over 42,000 Palestinians, the majority of whom were women and children.

While Sinwar’s death is seen by Israel as a significant victory, the long-term implications remain unclear. The ongoing conflict has left both sides deeply scarred, and the cycle of violence shows no sign of abating. Whether Sinwar’s death will bring an end to the conflict or merely usher in a new era of instability remains to be seen.
