**Kampala, Uganda** – Vasundhara Oswal, the 26-year-old daughter of Indian-origin Swiss industrialist Pankaj Oswal, has been detained in Uganda for over 90 hours, sparking an international outcry.
Oswal, executive director of PRO Industries, was reportedly taken into custody by armed men claiming to be law enforcement officers during a visit to an Extra Neutral Alcohol (ENA) plant in Uganda on October 1st. She was allegedly detained without a warrant, purportedly in connection with a missing man’s case.
Pankaj Oswal, a member of the renowned Oswal family and a prominent figure in the global conglomerate Oswal Group, has filed an urgent appeal with the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. He has also written to the President of Uganda urging intervention in the case.
Oswal’s detention comes after his recent investment of $100 million in Uganda for the development of the first ENA producer in the East African region. ENA is used in various products, including beverages, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.
Vasundhara, in an Instagram post, detailed her unlawful detention, alleging she was forced to sit in a room full of shoes for over 90 hours, denied basic necessities like clean water, proper food, and vegetarian options, and prevented from contacting family and lawyers.
Ugandan authorities have alleged that Vasundhara was detained on charges of kidnapping with intent to kill chef Mukesh Kumar Menaria, who worked for the family for seven years.
The Oswal family has denied these accusations, maintaining Vasundhara’s innocence and calling for her immediate release.
This incident has garnered international attention, highlighting concerns about the security and well-being of foreign investors in Uganda.
