Sumner, daughter of music legend Sting and actress Trudie Styler, has revealed her journey to becoming an actress. The 39-year-old, who spent her childhood touring the world with her parents, initially shied away from the acting world, admitting she “didn’t really believe in myself.”

While studying fine art at Parsons School of Design in New York, Sumner discovered her passion for acting through video performance. She realized that her shyness allowed her to embrace different characters, overcoming her initial hesitation.

Her acting journey started with offering her services to friends from NYU, Boston Conservatory, and Bard who were creating short films. Encouraged by their support, she joined acting classes and ultimately decided to pursue a career in acting.

Sumner’s first film role came through a chance encounter with the acclaimed Safdie brothers, Benny and Josh, her neighbors in New York. The directors cast Sumner and her younger brother in their short film, “We’re Going to the Zoo.”

Sumner’s journey showcases that even with a famous family and a nomadic upbringing, finding one’s path can be a personal and gradual discovery. Her story highlights the importance of self-belief and the supportive network that can inspire artistic pursuits.
