**New Delhi:** In a bid to curb ticket hoarding and promote genuine travel, the Indian Railways has reduced the advance reservation period (ARP) for train tickets from 120 days to 60 days, effective from November 1st, 2024.
The decision comes in response to high cancellation rates and no-show trends observed for bookings made 61 to 120 days in advance. According to the Railway Ministry, approximately 21% of reservations within this period were cancelled, with an additional 5% of passengers failing to either cancel or travel.
The shorter reservation window aims to improve the visibility of genuine travel demand and facilitate better planning for peak seasons. It is also expected to reduce the chances of ticket hoarding, making more tickets available for genuine passengers.
This policy change aims to improve the travel experience for passengers, reducing cancellations and ensuring a smoother journey for all.
While the new ARP applies to most trains, certain day-time express trains like the Taj Express and Gomti Express will continue to follow their existing lower advance reservation limits. The 365-day ARP limit for foreign tourists remains unchanged.
Bookings made prior to October 31st, 2024, under the 120-day ARP will remain valid. Passengers can still cancel reservations made beyond the new 60-day ARP.
The Indian Railways urges all passengers to be aware of the new policy and encourages early booking within the revised ARP for a seamless travel experience.
