Fri Oct 18 09:02:43 UTC 2024: ## Supreme Court Closes Case on Alleged Confinement at Isha Foundation

**New Delhi, October 18, 2024:** The Supreme Court of India has closed proceedings on a habeas corpus petition concerning two women allegedly held captive at the Isha Foundation, founded by spiritual leader Jaggi Vasudev, in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.

The court ruled that both women, who are adults, are residing at the ashram voluntarily and without coercion. The bench, led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, noted the police had submitted a status report as per the court’s previous order.

The court found that expanding the proceedings beyond the scope of the habeas corpus petition, which was initially filed with the Madras High Court, was unnecessary.

On October 3, the Supreme Court effectively halted the police investigation into the alleged illegal confinement, transferring the habeas corpus petition from the Madras High Court to itself. The top court subsequently directed the Tamil Nadu Police to cease further action in response to the High Court’s earlier directive to investigate the matter.

The Supreme Court’s decision follows the Isha Foundation challenging the High Court’s order to provide case details to the court for further consideration.
