**Gaza City, October 17, 2024:** Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared the killing of Yahya Sinwar, a key Hamas leader, a major victory in the ongoing conflict. Sinwar, widely seen as the architect of Hamas’s deadly October 7 attack on Israel, was killed in a firefight in Rafah, southern Gaza, on Wednesday.
According to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and Shin Bet security agency, Sinwar was killed alongside two other fighters. While initially not a direct target, Israeli troops identified Sinwar’s body following the firefight. His death was confirmed through DNA analysis, with part of his finger removed for expedited testing.
Netanyahu hailed the killing as a “significant blow” to Hamas and an “important landmark in the decline of the evil rule of Hamas.” He emphasized that the “war is not over yet” and urged Gaza militants to lay down their weapons and return Israeli hostages, promising to allow them to live.
Hamas has not yet issued an official statement on Sinwar’s death, but sources within Gaza have reportedly confirmed his demise. While there is hope for a ceasefire and the return of Israeli hostages following this development, the reaction of actors in the volatile West Asia region remains uncertain.
