Bengaluru: Concerns arose for Team India after wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant left the field during the second day of the first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru due to a blow to his left knee. Pant, who recently returned to competitive cricket following a serious car accident, was struck by a delivery from Ravindra Jadeja in the 37th over of New Zealand’s first innings.
Captain Rohit Sharma reassured the public that Pant’s departure was a precautionary measure, stating that the injury was to the same knee he had previously undergone surgery on. “He got hit on the left knee, the same as he had surgery. So, he left the field more as a precautionary measure. Hopefully, we can see him back on the field tomorrow,” said Sharma. He added that Pant was experiencing swelling and tenderness in the affected area.
The incident added to the woes of the Indian team, who suffered a historic collapse in the first innings, being bowled out for a mere 46 runs. This marked their lowest ever Test total on home soil, with five batsmen dismissed for ducks. The dismal performance was a stark contrast to the team’s previous record, which stood at 75 runs, achieved against the West Indies in Delhi nearly 37 years ago.
Despite the devastating loss, New Zealand capitalized on their advantage, ending the day’s play at 180 for three, securing a lead of 134 runs. Devon Conway, who scored 91 runs, and Will Young, who contributed 33 runs, led the charge for the Kiwis, establishing a 75-run partnership.
As the match continues, the focus shifts to the recovery of Rishabh Pant, while the Indian team grapples with the monumental task of clawing their way back into the game.
