Fri Oct 18 07:45:03 UTC 2024: ## Israeli Forces Eliminate Hamas Leader Yahya Sinwar in Southern Gaza

**Rafah, Gaza Strip** – Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced the elimination of Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, in a firefight in the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah. Sinwar, who had been on the run for over a year following his role in orchestrating the October 7 attacks on Israel, was killed in a chance encounter with an Israeli patrol.

The IDF stated that a unit from its 828th Bislamach Brigade engaged three Hamas fighters, including Sinwar, who were identified running from house to house in the Tal al-Sultan area. The soldiers initially did not realize the identity of one of the slain fighters, but upon closer inspection on Thursday morning, they determined that it was Sinwar.

The IDF confirmed that Sinwar was killed after being located with a drone, running alone into a building. His small entourage of guards suggests he was attempting to remain undetected or had lost many of his protectors. Notably, no hostages, who were believed to be held by Sinwar as human shields, were found at the scene.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant hailed the elimination of Sinwar, stating that he died “beaten, persecuted, and on the run,” and that this was a message to Israel’s enemies.

Drone footage released by the IDF shows Sinwar’s final moments, depicting him injured and sitting in a chair inside a destroyed building. He throws an object at the drone before the video ends.

While the killing of Sinwar represents a major victory for Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stressed that the war in Gaza is far from over. The IDF continues its operations, aiming to secure the release of 101 Israeli hostages still held by Hamas.

The elimination of Sinwar has been met with mixed reactions. While families of hostages in Israel express hope for a ceasefire, Hamas denies the IDF’s claims of a meeting point being struck and accuses Israel of withholding food aid from northern Gaza.
