Fri Oct 18 13:20:00 UTC 2024: ## Steelers QB Fields Acknowledges Struggles, But Remains Confident Amid Potential Starting Change

PITTSBURGH – Steelers quarterback Justin Fields, who started the first six games of the season, acknowledged Thursday that his performance has not met expectations. Despite leading the league with five rushing touchdowns, the Steelers’ offense has struggled, ranking 28th in passing and 20th in points per game.

“I don’t think I played good enough,” Fields admitted. “If I played well enough, I don’t think there would be any debate about who should be starting.”

While Fields acknowledged his struggles, he emphasized his desire to improve and remain a contributor to the team. “I’m just going to continue to work on those areas and continue to get better,” he said.

The uncertainty surrounding Fields’ future as the starter stems from the potential return of veteran quarterback Russell Wilson, who has been sidelined with a calf injury. Wilson, who practiced fully for the first time this week, could be the starter for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets.

Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, while acknowledging Fields’ self-criticism, expressed a different perspective. “Sometimes guys are too hard on themselves,” Smith said. “He’s pushing himself to be great, and that’s what separates the great ones from the rest.”

Coach Mike Tomlin has not yet announced his starting quarterback, but the possibility of Wilson returning has brought a potential change to the Steelers’ offensive approach. While Fields brings mobility and a strong rushing threat, Wilson is known for his ability to stretch the field with the deep ball.

Fields, however, remains committed to helping the team regardless of his role. “I’m just doing the same thing I was doing,” he said. “Whether I’m playing, helping the guys on the sideline, or helping Russ out, I’m just doing my job.”

Despite the potential for a diminished role, Fields insists that his preparation and approach will remain the same. He sees the season as a long journey and believes that anything is possible. “It’s a long season and life is crazy in general, so you just never know,” he said.
