**NEW YORK** – Good Morning America anchor and ABC 7 meteorologist Sam Champion has undergone his sixth skin cancer surgery, highlighting the importance of sun safety and early detection. Champion, who is known for his love of the outdoors and his Miami Beach home, shared his story on Wednesday after a successful Mohs surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Champion, who has a history of skin cancer dating back to age 26, noticed a red, hard lump under his right eye that he self-diagnosed as basal cell carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer. This was confirmed by his dermatologist, leading to the recent surgery.

The Mohs procedure, which Champion’s surgeon Dr. Anthony Rossi described as a precise removal of cancer using a microscope, allowed for the least amount of healthy skin to be removed. Dr. Rossi also warned that skin cancer often presents only a small visible portion, with deeper and wider areas revealed during surgery.

Champion attributes his skin cancer to his childhood sunburns and encourages everyone to wear sunscreen and get regular skin checks. He emphasizes the importance of knowledge and preparedness, noting that early detection significantly improves the chances of a cure.
