Thu Oct 17 21:20:00 UTC 2024: ## Chargers Capitalize on Surtain Injury, Defeat Broncos 23-16
**DENVER, CO -** The Los Angeles Chargers overcame a shaky start and a key injury to star cornerback Patrick Surtain II to defeat the Denver Broncos 23-16 on Sunday. Surtain suffered a concussion on the Broncos’ first defensive play, leaving a gaping hole in Denver’s defense that the Chargers exploited throughout the game.
Quarterback Justin Herbert led a methodical Chargers offense that controlled the clock and built a 23-0 lead by the end of the third quarter. Herbert finished with a season-high 237 yards passing and displayed impressive accuracy, avoiding pressure and finding open receivers.
“I thought he was as precise as he could be, or a quarterback could be,” said Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh, who returned to the sidelines in the first quarter after being treated for an irregular heartbeat. “He was just putting the ball in the appropriate spot throughout the entire game. I was super impressed.”
The Broncos, meanwhile, struggled offensively for much of the game. Quarterback Bo Nix eventually led them on a 95-yard scoring drive in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late. The Broncos managed just three points in the first half, and their offense faltered under the pressure of the Chargers’ defense.
“Just didn’t perform how we want, but we feel like the fight was there,” said Nix.
Surtain’s absence was a major factor in the Broncos’ struggles. His two-interception performance against the Raiders last week earned him AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors, highlighting his critical role in Denver’s defense.
“It was very unfortunate because he’s not just a huge part of the defense, but the team,” said Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton.
The Chargers benefited from a strong running game, with Kimami Vidal scoring his first NFL touchdown on a 38-yard catch-and-run, and J.K. Dobbins adding a 4-yard rushing touchdown.
Despite the Broncos’ late rally, the Chargers held on for the victory, their first win over Denver in two years. The Chargers will now travel to Arizona to face the Cardinals on Monday night, while the Broncos will head to New Orleans for a Thursday night matchup against the Saints.
