**Idukki, Kerala:** Acclaimed Malayalam director Amal Neerad ventures into the realm of psychological thrillers with his latest film, “Bougainvillea,” starring Kunchacko Boban, Jyothirmayi, and Fahadh Faasil. The film, adapted from Lajo Jose’s novel “Ruthinte Lokam,” follows the story of Dr. Royce (Kunchacko Boban) and his wife Reethu (Jyothirmayi), whose lives are thrown into disarray after a car accident leaves Reethu suffering from amnesia.

Reethu’s obsession with bougainvillea flowers and her struggle to distinguish reality from hallucinations form the crux of the narrative. As Royce and their maid, Rema (Srinu), try to help her cope, the arrival of ACP David Koshy (Fahadh Faasil) on a missing girl investigation adds another layer of intrigue.

The film is praised for its strong visuals by Anend C Chandran and slick editing by Vivek Harshan. Music director Sushin Shyam’s score enhances the thriller experience, particularly the use of animal sounds to heighten the tension.

While the first half captivates with its mystery and builds up suspense, the second half falters somewhat, leaving the audience with a sense of anticipation that isn’t fully met. However, the film’s strength lies in Jyothirmayi’s powerful performance as Reethu. After an 11-year hiatus, she delivers a stellar comeback, bringing depth and emotion to the role.

“Bougainvillea” is a departure from Neerad’s previous works, but it nonetheless retains his signature style. While not as impactful as some of his earlier films, it’s a promising foray into a new genre, with Jyothirmayi’s performance deserving of special mention.
