**Seattle, WA –** Amazon Web Services (AWS) is making a significant investment in nuclear power, pledging over $500 million to three projects in Virginia and Washington state. This move aims to address the burgeoning energy demand of its data centers, particularly with the growing use of AI applications.
AWS, a subsidiary of Amazon, is seeking to power its growing cloud computing infrastructure with clean energy sources. The company has partnered with Dominion Energy in Virginia to explore the development of a small modular reactor (SMR) near the North Anna nuclear power station. Additionally, AWS has signed an agreement with Energy Northwest in Washington state to fund the construction of four SMRs. These reactors will provide energy directly to the grid, benefitting both Amazon’s operations and local communities.
“We see the need for gigawatts of power in the coming years, and there’s not going to be enough wind and solar projects to be able to meet the needs,” said Matthew Garman, CEO of AWS. “Nuclear is a great opportunity, and the technology is advancing with SMRs, offering a safe and efficient solution.”
This investment in nuclear power reflects a broader trend in the tech industry. Google recently announced a similar partnership with SMR developer Kairos Power, and Constellation Energy is restarting the Three Mile Island plant to power Microsoft data centers.
Governor Glenn Youngkin of Virginia welcomed the news, highlighting the state’s position as a leading nuclear innovation hub. “Small modular nuclear reactors will play a critical role in meeting the future power needs of a growing Virginia,” he stated.
The U.S. Department of Energy has pledged $900 million in funding to support the development and deployment of SMRs. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm emphasized the need for clean energy sources to power data centers located within the United States for national security purposes.
