**Chennai, October 17, 2024:** The story of Valmiki, the sage who penned the epic Ramayana, is a testament to the transformative power of faith and self-realization, according to scholar S. Perundevi.

Valmiki’s journey from a hunter to a renowned sage is a fascinating one. In his past life, he was a voracious hunter, oblivious to the sins of indiscriminate killing. A chance encounter with the seven sages (saptarishis) awakened him to the gravity of his actions.

The sages urged Valmiki to seek forgiveness and understand the weight of his sins. He questioned his family if they were willing to share the burden of his actions, only to be met with rejection and blame. This realization led him to seek enlightenment.

The sages guided him towards chanting the name of Rama, but Valmiki struggled to pronounce it. They then directed him to chant the name of a nearby tree, which he did with unwavering faith. His devotion transformed the sounds into the sacred “Rama namam”. He remained in deep meditation, becoming enveloped by an anthill.

The sages returned and discovered the anthill, realizing it was Valmiki transformed. They freed him, and from the “valmikam” (anthill) emerged the fully realized soul, Valmiki. His faith brought him divine blessings, including the gift of language and the ability to compose epics.

Brahma himself entrusted Valmiki with the task of writing the Ramayana, urging him to share the story of Rama’s virtuous life with the world. This tale highlights the profound journey of self-discovery and the power of faith in shaping one’s destiny, a message that continues to resonate through the ages.
