**MINYA, EGYPT -** A train collision in Upper Egypt on Sunday has resulted in one fatality and 21 injuries, prompting a swift response from the Minister of Transport, Kamel El-Wazir. In a statement, Wazir, also serving as the Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development, pledged “exemplary punishment” for those responsible for the incident.

The collision occurred when a locomotive collided with the rear of a sleeper train traveling from Aswan to Cairo, causing two carriages to fall into the Ibrahimiya Canal in Minya governorate.

Wazir has ordered an immediate investigation into the technical causes of the collision, emphasizing that all involved parties, including train operators, signaling tower supervisors, operational engineers, and the area’s official, will be investigated by the Public Prosecution.

“No offender will evade punishment,” Wazir stated, emphasizing that stringent penalties will be applied to ensure this incident serves as a deterrent for future negligence and errors.

The Ministry of Transport has also pledged to enforce rigorous legal and disciplinary measures against any individuals found responsible for the incident. The ministry has vowed to eradicate negligence and recklessness from the railway system.

“The ministry will not shield any wrongdoer for their misconduct, regardless of whether it results from negligence, recklessness, or a disregard for the laws and regulations of the Egyptian National Railways,” the minister stressed.

The Ministry of Health has reported that 19 of the injured individuals have been discharged from the hospital, while two remain under care at Minya General Hospital. The incident comes a month after a similar collision in Zagazig city, which claimed the lives of three people, including two children, and injured over 40 others.
