Thu Oct 17 14:46:11 UTC 2024: ## Chennai Braces for More Heavy Rains as Depression Approaches
**Chennai, Tamil Nadu:** Heavy rainfall is set to continue in Chennai and surrounding areas, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a warning of heavy to extremely heavy rain in the districts of Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Chennai.
The IMD has attributed this heavy rainfall to a depression that is moving towards the north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coast and is expected to cross between Nellore and Puducherry, near Chennai, in the early hours of October 17th.
The depression has already led to extremely heavy rainfall in 5 places in Tamil Nadu, very heavy rainfall in 48 places, and heavy rainfall in 21 places over the past 24 hours. The total rainfall recorded since October 1st is 138mm.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea in the affected areas.
The heavy rains have already caused flooding in residential neighbourhoods and roads across Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu. The IMD has predicted more rain for the next two days, with squally weather and wind speeds reaching 60 km per hour.
The downpour has also affected the first Test match between India and New Zealand at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, with the game delayed due to incessant rain.
The weather department has forecast showers throughout the day, raising concerns about the possibility of further disruptions to the match on Thursday.
