Prime Minister Christopher Luxon is in Laos for the East Asia Summit, where he’s meeting with a number of world leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Luxon confirmed the government is still pursuing a free trade agreement (FTA) with India, despite not directly raising the issue in his initial comments.
While acknowledging the ambitious nature of the goal, Luxon reiterated that an FTA remains a commitment for this term. However, he acknowledged that formal negotiations would need to begin next year for an agreement to be reached by the end of the current term.
Luxon also emphasized the importance of deepening economic and security ties with India, citing its large population and growing economy. He is hoping to visit India next year, following on from visits by Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters and Trade Minister Todd McClay.
Beyond the FTA, experts suggest New Zealand focus on enhancing business partnerships with Indian companies and establishing direct air connectivity.
Luxon is also holding meetings with leaders from Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam, as well as participating in a three-way meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He emphasized the importance of building relationships with ASEAN countries, highlighting their potential for further trade growth.
