**Bengaluru:** India’s Test squad is facing injury concerns ahead of the first Test against New Zealand, starting on Wednesday. Shubman Gill, the team’s number three batter, is doubtful for the match due to a stiff neck. If Gill doesn’t recover in time, Sarfaraz Khan, who impressed during his debut Test series against England earlier this year, could be called up, with KL Rahul likely moving up to number three.
Meanwhile, the fitness of pacer Mohammed Shami remains a major concern. While he is unlikely to feature in the New Zealand series, the team is aiming to get him back in shape for the upcoming tour of Australia. Shami suffered a setback in his recovery after experiencing swelling in his knee, and is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).
“It’s difficult to say if he’ll be fit for this series or the Australia series,” said India captain Rohit Sharma. “We are hoping for his full recovery. We don’t want to rush him back and risk him being undercooked for Australia. He hasn’t played cricket for a year, and it’s tough for a fast bowler to return to top form after such a long break.”
Sharma also confirmed that the team is closely monitoring the progress of travelling reserves Mayank Yadav, Nitish Reddy, and Harshit Rana, who are all in contention for a spot in the Australia squad. Prasidh Krishna, who suffered a niggle during the Ranji Trophy, is also a potential candidate, provided he recovers fully.
