Thu Oct 17 14:03:57 UTC 2024: ## Deadly Train Crash in Egypt: One Killed, Several Injured
**Minya, Egypt** – A train crash in southern Egypt has left one person dead and at least 21 injured. The collision occurred on Sunday in the province of Minya, approximately 168 miles south of Cairo, when a locomotive rear-ended a Cairo-bound passenger train. The impact caused two carriages to detach and fall into an adjacent canal.
Footage from the scene shows the two submerged carriages and the remaining train continuing its journey to Cairo. The Health Ministry reported that 19 of the injured were treated and discharged, while two remain hospitalized. The injuries ranged from bruises and abrasions to superficial wounds.
The railway authority is investigating the cause of the crash and has detained the driver of the locomotive for questioning. This is the second fatal train crash in Egypt within a month. In September, a collision in the Nile Delta resulted in three deaths.
Experts attribute the frequent railway accidents to human error, the poor condition of the aging rail network, and a lack of safety systems. The Egyptian government has pledged to invest heavily in modernizing the railway infrastructure, aiming to improve safety and reliability.
President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi has announced a substantial investment of $8.13 billion (€7.43 billion) for a complete overhaul of the railway system. Despite this commitment, recent accidents highlight the urgency of implementing safety improvements to prevent further tragedies.
