Thu Oct 17 14:02:36 UTC 2024: ## Coimbatore Corporation Steps Up Flood Prevention Measures After Heavy Rains
**Coimbatore, October 15, 2024:** Following heavy rains that lashed the city on October 13 and 14, averaging 70mm and 30mm respectively, the Coimbatore Corporation has intensified its flood prevention efforts. The downpour resulted in waterlogging of underpasses and flooding of streets across several areas, prompting the civic body to take immediate action.
The Corporation has identified six major flood-prone locations within the city and has initiated targeted interventions. One key project involves constructing a twin-drain system at Selvachintamani Tank to channel excess water to Periyakulam in Ukkadam. The existing drain was cleared of plastic waste to ensure smooth water flow. This new system, estimated to cost ₹35 crore, will be modeled after the recently completed project along Trichy Road for Valankulam.
In Ward 61’s Kathiravan Garden, a breach in the Sanganoor Canal due to surging water flow led to flooding in nearby residential areas. The Corporation has deployed sandbags to prevent further inflow into the area.
Desilting and dewatering equipment are being deployed across all zones, standing ready to be deployed to affected areas as needed. The Sivanandha Colony railway underpass, where buses got stuck due to waterlogging on consecutive days, is also being desilted.
Responding to resident complaints, the Corporation’s engineering wing has cleared the canal near Perks Arch Road and removed old sluice gates to enhance water drainage. These measures are expected to improve the city’s resilience against future flooding events.
