**Mumbai, October 26th, 2023:** With the Maharashtra Assembly elections just a month away, political tension is at its peak. The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance, buoyed by their recent victory in Haryana, appears to be in a strong position to retain power in the state. However, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance faces internal strife and lack of unity, which could hamper their chances of unseating the ruling government.
Despite the INDIA bloc winning more seats in Maharashtra during the Lok Sabha elections, both alliances secured a similar vote share. However, analysts believe that the BJP needs to increase their vote share by 10% in Marathwada and Vidarbha regions to ensure a victory.
The political landscape in Maharashtra has been drastically reshaped since the 2019 elections, with splits within the Shiv Sena and NCP. These factions are now both in the government coalition and the opposition, leading to complicated seat-sharing negotiations and power struggles within the MVA. The Congress, while aiming to be the senior partner in the MVA, has lost bargaining power after its underwhelming performance in Haryana, further hindering the alliance’s ability to present a unified front.
The Mahayuti, on the other hand, benefits from a clear leadership in Eknath Shinde, who is widely tipped to be the next Chief Minister. The Shinde-led government is actively utilizing targeted schemes to attract voters, including the “Ladli Behen” scheme, which has proven successful in Madhya Pradesh. Additionally, the government’s recent announcement of a toll waiver for light motor vehicles in Mumbai is seen as a strategy to appease voters in the city.
While the MVA is struggling to find a compelling narrative to challenge the Mahayuti, the murder of NCP leader Baba Siddique is being used to criticize the current government’s law and order situation.
The coming weeks will be crucial as both alliances intensify their campaigns and try to woo voters. The outcome of the election will depend on factors like the effectiveness of the Mahayuti’s targeted schemes, the MVA’s ability to overcome their internal challenges and present a unified front, and the ability of both sides to successfully engage with voters on key issues like Maratha agitation, farmer discontent, and OBC reservation demands.
