Wed Oct 16 04:42:56 UTC 2024: ## New Zealand Ready for “Enormous Task” Against India in Test Series
**Wellington, New Zealand -** New Zealand captain Tom Latham has acknowledged the formidable challenge ahead as his team prepares to face a “well-rounded” Indian side in a three-match Test series beginning Wednesday.
Latham highlighted India’s strength in both batting and bowling, particularly their spin attack and a potent seam bowling unit featuring Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Akash Deep. “They have a lot of match winners who can take a game away from you pretty quickly,” he stated.
Despite the daunting task, Latham expressed confidence in his team’s ability to rise to the occasion, drawing on their previous experiences in India. However, the Kiwis will miss the presence of former captain Kane Williamson, who is sidelined due to a groin injury. This opens the door for Will Young to bat at number three, presenting an opportunity for the young batsman to make his mark.
The absence of Ben Sears through a knee injury has also paved the way for veteran Tim Southee to potentially return to the playing XI, particularly if the team opts for three seamers.
While acknowledging a challenging build-up to the series following a 0-2 defeat to Sri Lanka, Latham emphasized the valuable lessons learned in that tour. He expressed optimism about adapting to the different conditions in India, pointing out that the Galle wicket offered little assistance for bowlers.
Latham, who assumed captaincy permanently after Tim Southee stepped down, expressed his excitement and privilege in leading the side. He underlined his commitment to performing his role to the best of his ability, regardless of the captaincy role.
The first Test of the series begins on Wednesday at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.
